Who We Are
Melody Spear, Executive Director
Melody Spear became the second director of Square Studio Dance in 2025. She brings to the position her extensive experience in both dance and the healing arts as well as her dedication to making dance accessible for children and families who are challenged to find connection to the art for physical or financial reasons.
Melody has been involved in the field of dance for over forty years. She received her Bachelor of Arts in dance from Bennington College in 1988 where she studied with Martha Wittman, Jack Moore, Akiko Kanda, Phoebe Neville and Terry Creach. During her time at Bennington she completed field work with the Joan Lombardi Dance Company as a grant researcher in New York City while continuing training at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio. Melody was then invited to attend the Jacob’s Pillow summer arts intensive where she studied choreography with Bessie Schönberg and went on to become a founding member and tap dancer/vocalist with the San Francisco eclectic band Wilma Don’t Tap. Melody has choreographed for the stage, performance art, film and flash mobs.
Melody’s interest in movement and health led her to become a licensed massage therapist, holistic health counselor and then a chiropractor, graduating summa cum laude from Life Chiropractic College West in 2001. She values the intersections between dance, music, creativity and healing and is thrilled to assist in expanding opportunities for more people to experience their benefits.
Melody is dedicated to fostering accessibility and innovation in dance and excited to expand global availability to movement and community for all those wishing to participate.
